Algeria The Algerian Air Force operates ten C-130Hs and eight C-130H-30s at Al Quwwat al Jawwiya al Jaza’eriya. They received their first C-130’s in 1981. The aircraft are shared among the 31, 32, 33 and 35 Escadrilles (squadrons). Deliveries began in 1981 and all had arrived by 1984 except for one which was delivered in 1990. The first batch of C-130Hs were delivered as an acknowledgement by the US of Algeria’s mediating role in the release of the Tehran Embassy hostages. All the air force aircraft retain their civil registrations and most still wear the grey/white scheme with a green stripe, along with roundels and Algerian Air Force titles in English and Arabic on opposite sides of the fuselage. Vector Aerospace Corporation in Toronto, Canada announced that it has been chosen as the preferred bidder for a 3-year contract to maintain and overhaul the Rolls Royce T56 engines used on the Royal Saudi Air Force fleet of C-130 military transport aircraft. The final contract with with Vector’s UK subsidiary Sigma Aerospace is expected to be signed in the next month. Scramble notes that the Saudis base their C-130Es and C-130Hs out of Riyadh and Jeddah, though there are also some KC-130H aerial tankers at Price Sultan Air Base (Al Kharj, near Riyadh).

Based upon the number of engines in the fleet and the estimated scope of work, Vector’s bid estimated aggregate revenues in the $34 million range. Nevertheless, revenues could be substantially higher depending on actual maintenance requirements. Over the past year, Sigma Aerospace has also secured T56 maintenance contracts with the Belgian Air Force, the Swedish Air Force and the Algerian Air Force, making them Europe’s largest independent provider of MRO services for the T56 engine.
